You have more Time than you Think
Language Analysis
I observe the following words written. What do they tell me?
“You have less time than you think.”
Common, Conscious Interpretation
This statement makes me feel a sense of urgency. This makes me act to improve my situation where I otherwise wouldn’t. It “motivates” me. Thus, it helps me.
Uncommon, Subconscious Interpretation
This statement contains one major affirmation. “You have less time.” What is the psychological effect of feeling you have more time to work with?
People want to do a good job. They love to complete their tasks properly. They find it very satisfying.
Why don’t people always do a good job? They have to weigh a trade-off. All else equal, doing a better job takes more time.
Effect of the Affirmation
“You have more time than you think” is not exactly a factual statement. It’s an affirmation that inculcates a particular mindset.
The main psychological effect on people who affirm “I have more time than I think” is that they do a better job in tasks that matter to them.
There is always more time. When you suddenly find a strong intrinsic motivation to accomplish a task, you realize this is true.
People who are highly motivated to do a good job of something find time out of other activities that they realize are a lower priority. There are limits, but when you hit them, it will be obvious. For many of you, they are so far away that you effectively do not have any limits.
It’s easier for you to find more time when you have a clear sense of what matters most to you and you know what possessions you consider non-negotiable.
Everyone understands that you get better results when you do a better job. If something is a top priority for you, you are likely to do the best possible job of it.
If you affirm, “I have more time than I realize,” you are more likely to do a better job where it really matters. If you affirm the opposite, the opposite is true.
I’m happy either way. It’s up to you. Make the call.
See you underground.
